Cubica was founded specifically to drive innovation in machine learning, data fusion and autonomous systems. We’re a research and development organisation, intentionally structured to minimise time-to-output by employing a small but highly selective team of Mathematicians, Engineers and Computer Scientists: many of our team have PhDs from top tier UK universities. 

We have a combination of deeply academic backgrounds with years of hands-on industrial experience from Telecoms, Finance, and Defence. We act as a bridge between the latest scientific developments in data processing and real-world application, allowing us to effectively and efficiently translate the latest advances into operational value.


Since being founded in 2013, Cubica and its employees have already developed several world-first technologies and have begun receiving accolades for their research and data science capabilities. We are recognised by the UK Government as leading innovators in our area.

Simon Islip

Technical Director & Co-Founder

Simon has nearly two decades’ experience with software and systems, and is actively involved with all projects, ensuring that effective and efficient designs, architectures, practices, and tools are used. Throughout his career, Simon has worked across the entire software and systems lifecycle and has extensive experience in architecting and developing complex systems involving both software and hardware components. He has considerable experience in the areas of image and data processing.

Simon holds an MEng degree in Microelectronics and Software Engineering from Newcastle University where he specialised in real-time software. He worked for 12 years in the telecoms industry, working on software-hardware interaction across a portfolio of platforms.


Prior to co-founding Cubica Technology, Simon spent 5 years developing state of the art image and signal processing systems for the defence and security sector. He held the role of Software Team Leader at Digital Barriers, managing a team of engineers on several major R&D projects for high profile international organisations. Simon is a certified Agile SCRUM master.

Sapient-HLDMM

Our HLDMM is a SAPIENT compatible next-genaration sensor fusion and control system conceived by UK MOD. It is the first ever system of its type and acts as the central situational awareness and control module for the system. Simon remains heavily involved in the design of the software which is a complex multi-threaded real-time system.

Scott Page

Managing Director & Co-Founder

Scott has over 15 years’ technical and commercial experience in the development of complex processing systems in the defence and security sector. He leads the Company’s engagement with the UK Government, and has led the conceptual design of many of the Company’s core technologies. Over his career he has developed an extensive range of algorithms and systems for image enhancement, object classification and recognition, target tracking, and data fusion
Scott holds a 1st class MEng degree in Electronics with Artificial Intelligence, and a PhD in Data Fusion and Optimisation from the University of Southampton. Prior to establishing Cubica Technology, Scott held the role of Head of Engineering at Digital Barriers, where he was responsible for the delivery of a £3M portfolio of high risk R&D projects to UK and international defence organisations. Scott is a Chartered Engineer, a PRINCE2 practitioner, and has designed accredited ISO9001:2008 Quality Management Systems for complex R&D services.

Scott is heavily involved in the development of TensorGrid, a next generation media content analysis system. Scott pioneered the overall concept and is engaged with various UK government departments to explore its potential in the fight against serious crime. TensorGrid supports rapid analysis of large media collections.

Russell Brandon

Russell brings a wealth of experience and expertise in mathematical modelling and complex algorithm development. He provides guidance and technical assurance for algorithm development and real-time software implementation and is responsible for Cubica’s technology horizon scanning activities.

Russell holds undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Mathematics and Mathematical Modelling. Prior to co-founding Cubica Technology, Russell was a technical consultant at Digital Barriers, where he developed a wide range of image processing and machine learning algorithms including low-level filtering, de-noising, and target detection and classification systems. Russell has extensive experience in the application of machine learning techniques to object recognition in imagery, analyst-in-the-loop learning systems, as well as in the use of adaptive techniques to provide real-world robustness.
